SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE DIABETES
DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIABETES -
ABOUT PRE-DIABETES -
If you take anything anyway from this, remember that 57 million Americans can avoid getting diabetes, if they just ate right with some mild exercise.
ABOUT TYPE 1 DIABETES -
10% of people with diabetes have Type 1. With Type 1 diabetes, the body attacks its own insulin making cells, and is thought to be caused by a virus. From there, the
pancreas no longer produces insulin. Insulin is the hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other foods into your daily needed energy. People with Type
1 diabetes need to inject insulin either with syringes or an insulin pump to control their blood sugars.
ABOUT TYPE 2 DIABETES -
Type 2 Diabetes was called non-insulin dependent diabetes or adult onset diabetes in the past. 90 - 95% of people with diabetes have Type 2. With this type, the body
makes insulin but it may not make enough. Sometimes the body doesn't respond to the insulins action as it should Type 2 often occurs in adults over 45 but a growing
number of children and teens now have Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is preventable!
Risk Factors for Type 2 diabetes include:
- Older Age
- Obesity
- Family history of diabetes
- History of Gestational diabetes
- Impaired glucose tolerance
- Physical inactivity
- Race/ethnicity
(African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at a particularly high risk for Type 2 diabetes.
ABOUT GESTATIONAL DIABETES -
Gestational Diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. About 4% of women will have gestational diabetes. If not treated, it can cause problems for
mothers and babies. One-third of women who had gestational diabetes will go on to have type 2 diabetes later in life.
